Founded August 19, 2005, the SC MAP Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to increasing the instructional growth of all students across the state of South Carolina and beyond.

The foundation began as the vision of Tom Pritchard, an educator with Horry County Schools. Tom Pritchard wanted to create an organization where the broad spectrum of educators, classroom teachers, district office staff, superintendents, school board members, and others could come together to discuss formative assessment and methods of using the results of formative assessment to inform and guide instructional practices in the classroom.
 
The founding members were of the SC MAP Foundation were the following:

Past conferences have been held in:
2004 Columbia, SC - 300 attendees
2005 Myrtle Beach, SC - 700 attendees
2006 Greenville, SC - 1,000 attendees
2007 Hilton Head, SC - 1,000 attendees
 
The 2008 conference in Myrtle Beach is anticipated to include 1,200 attendees.
